Disgruntled MIC Youth chiefs push for Samy's resignation

PETALING JAYA: A group of disgruntled MIC grassroots leaders, including sacked deputy Youth leader V. Mugilan, have set up an Anti-Samy Vellu Movement (GAS) to push for the immediate resignation of the party president.

Mugilan said the movement, to be launched on May 30, will explain to party members and Malaysians in general, why Datuk Seri S. Samy should resign as president.

The movement will start its campaign in Kuala Lumpur and move on to other cities, he added.

“We will explain to the people and conduct a signature campaign,” said Mugilan, adding that the movement would exist as long as Samy Vellu held on to office.

“I have no personal agenda against Samy Vellu. My agenda is the poor Indians and MIC members who have been cheated,” said Mugilan, adding that the movement was multiracial and “anybody who does not like Samy Vellu is invited to join”.

He claimed that he had the support of the people and several MIC “top guns”.

“We will distribute a CD to those who attend the launching ceremony. It will provide information on Samy Vellu's leadership,” he said, adding that the movement would also use e-mail and Facebook to attract supporters.

Mugilan was sacked on Thursday after asking Samy Vellu to step down now instead of his planned exit next September.

Two other central working committee members - G. Kumar Aamaan and K.P. Samy - have joined Mugilan in his call for Samy Vellu to resign.

At a press conference here, Mugilan said he would not appeal to be reinstated as deputy Youth leader but would instead appeal to remain as a member.

Also present was Kumar Aamaan. Mugilan read out a list of problems that Samy Vellu had supposedly brought upon the MIC, including the Maika Holdings controversy, nepotism and its decline under his leadership.
